Town Board Statement on Airport Case Rulings
The Suffolk County Supreme Court issued an order yesterday enjoining the Town of East Hampton from “deactivating or closing HTO Airport.” The order came in response to a now months-old request by certain aviation interests to halt the deactivation of the East Hampton Airport (HTO). The order does not address the years of hard work that Town officials devoted to public outreach, stakeholder collaboration, and coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration on establishing a first-of-its-kind local airport: the East Hampton Town Airport (JPX). Nor does the order mention the overwhelming community consensus in favor of commonsense airport regulations, such as limits on especially noisy aircraft and curfews for late-night and early-morning flights.
The Town Board is conferring with its outside counsel to assess any effects of the decision, to maintain the Town’s continued compliance with all court orders, and to consider the Town’s legal options, including appeal. The Town remains firmly committed to ensuring that its airport best serves the community.
